Brazil defeated debutantes Cameroon 3-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The South Americans needed a comeback and an extra time fight to earn Brazil a hard-fought win over Cameroon. Priscila equalised with a penalty while Dudinha scored twice in extra time to seal the comeback.

Cameroon, who are playing their first ever knockout round match, looked confident from the start of the game. The Africans took the lead in the 22nd minute, when Nina Ngueleu fed Naomi Eto, for a 1-0 lead.

However, Brazil reacted fast as a risky challenge from the Cameroonian defence paved the way for a penalty. Priscila converted to end the first half levelled at 1-1.

Both teams had some nervy moments as Eto and Ngueleu troubled the Brazilian defence, while Brazil’s counterattack kept Cameroon on their toes. Wayward finishing however resulted in extra time.

Brazil wasted no time in getting the lead at the extra time as Dudinha scored in the 91st minute. She swooped onto a loose ball, drived toward goal and finished smatly. She then added a late strike in the dying moments to secure the victory.

With the win, Brazil have reached their eighth U-20 Women’s World Cup quarter-final. The South Americans will meet either Austria or Korea DPR.

Spain fought hard to defeat Canada 2-1 to to progress to the quarter-finals of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The defending champions fell behind in the second half but responded in style with goals from Amezaga and Lloris capping the comeback win.

The European giant were made to work hard for things in a tense victory over Canada in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Spain had the better of a tight first half with both Silvia Lloris and Olaya Enrique getting off early shots, Canadian keeper, Noelle Henning, also made a smart reaction save with her foot to deny Julia Bartel as the first half went goalless.

However, Canada took the lead in the second half after a commanding performace. Captain Florianne Jourde smashed home a rebound after substitute Annabelle Chukwu shot was blocked by Eunate Astralaga.

The goal was the first that Spain had conceded at Colombia 2024.  The champions responded immediately as they got the equalising goal two minutes after conceding.

Spain no9, Jone Amezaga, stabbed home a Lucia Corrales’ cross from inside the six-yard to level things at 1-1 in the 65th minute.

They wrapped things up as substitute Lucia Moral chested down Judit Pujols’ swunged ball, for captain Lloris to tuck home.

The defending champions will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Japan and Nigeria.
