The U20 Women’s World Cup started on a brighter note for host nation, Columbia, as they defeated Australia 2-0. Brazil also recorded a heavy win over underdogs Fiji 9-0.
Columbia won the game courtesy of Yunaira Lopez and Linda Caicedo’s goals to sit top of Group A.
Columbia started brightly, asking all the questions but could not penetrate the Australian defence wall. Finally, Columbia opened the scoring in the 58th minute as defender Yunaira got the first goal for the host nation.
Australia got the equaliser in the 73rd minute but it was ruled off for an offside, after a VAR review.
Three minutes later, Real Madrid Women star, Linda Caicedo, doubled the lead for Columbia, following an assist from Maithe Lopez.
Columbia will play Cameroon next on September 4, before facing Mexico on September 6.
Meanwhile, Brazil demolished Fiji, who are making their debut at the U20 Women’s World Cup tournament.
The South American giant left no pity for Oceania debutants as they whipped nine goals past them.
Brazil started the riot in the 4th minute as they went on to score five goals in the first half. They added four more goals in the second half to complete the massacre.
Victoria Amaral Santana and Natalia Vendito scored two goals each, while Lara Dantas, Priscila, Fernanda de Almeida, Milena Ferreira and Gisele Vale scored one apiece.
Brazil will face France next on September 3, before playing Canada on the 7th of September.
