Host nation, Columbia, has qualified for the knockout round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The South American defeated Cameroon 1-0 to join Brazil in securing a spot for the next round.
Substitute Yesica Munoz’ second half header settled the game to claim all three points for Columbia.
Both teams tested each other goalkeepers, making the game a tough one. The game ended goalless at half time as Luisa Agudelo saved Cameroon’s Camilla Daha shot. Linda Caicedo also had her attempt saved by Cameroon goalkeeper, Cathy Biya.
Columbia however, broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, as substitute Munoz rose to meet a Gabriela Rodriguez cross to score the winner.
Munoz had two clear chances to double the lead but spurned it and was rescued by Agudelo, who produced a fine save to stop Naomi Eto at stoppage time.
Colombia are safely through while Cameroon’s fate will be settled on the final matchday, as they face Australia.
Mexico claimed their first win of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in a 2-0 win over Australia.
The loss made it Australia’s second of the tournament having lost the first game to the host nation, Columbia.
Second half goals from Fatima Servin and Alejandra Lomeli earned Mexico maximum points against the Australians. El Tricolor move to four points after two matches to put a foot in the knockout round.
Mexico came close to open the lead in the 20th minute when Maribel Flores sent a rocket that hit the crossbar.
Australia’s big chance came later in the half when a Kahli Johnson cross struck the arm of Isabela Esquivias. A penalty was awarded after VAR review but Johnson failed to convert, firing over the crossbar.
Mexico then took the lead in second half when Fatima Servin slotted home a rebound from Montserrat Saldivar’s effort.
The North American side sealed the victory in stoppage time, as Alejandra Lomeli stabbed home a cross from Natalia Colin.
They also extend their unbeaten streak in group stage outings at the tournament to five. Australia are however, still searching for their first point.
Mexico will face host nation, Columbia, as they need just a point to advance to the next round.
