Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti agreed with the decision of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), over Julian Alvarez’s penalty annulment, when asked to give his opinion.

Alvarez scored during the penalty shootout, but after a VAR review, it was determined that he had touched the ball twice, and the Madrid head coach was in agreement with this.

“I think they had already detected it. When we realised this doubt, they had already detected it from the VAR. I have not realised this. I’ve seen it and I think he touches the second touch with his left foot.”

The incident played out when Alvarez slipped in his run-up before seeing his effort fire into the top of the net. But after a short VAR check, referee Szymon Marciniak announced the effort had been ruled out.

The Argentine spotkick was ruled as a miss because the ball ricocheted off his left foot after he initially kicked it with his right as he slipped.

Meanwhile, in a penalty shootout, the kicker cannot make contact with the ball at all after it initially leaves their boot. And since Alvarez made a second contact with the ball, it was determined that he encroached on the aforementioned rule.

Real Madrid went on to defeat Diego Simeone’s side 4-2, on penalties, having lost 1-0, in the second leg.

During the game, Connor Gallagher had opened the scoring after just 27 seconds, to level on aggregate for Atletico.

The England International bursted into Giuliano Simeone’s flick in the box, to fire past Thibaut Courtois.

Gallagher’s goal was the fastest ever scored by an Englishman in the Champions League. It was also Atletico’s fastest Champions League goal as well as the England international’s first in European competition.

Los Blancos had a chance to settle the contest when Kylian Mbappe was fouled in the box by Clement Lenglet. However, Vinicius Jr. missed the spotkick as he sent his effort hopelessly high and wide over the crossbar.

Real Madrid went on to win the penalty shootout. Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Antonio Rudiger scored, with only Lucas Vazquez missing.

Alvarez’s illegal kick and Marcos Llorente missed knocked Atletico out of the tournament.

Los Blancos will be facing English side, Arsenal, in the quarter final next month.
