Bayern Munich got their UEFA Champions League campaign underway with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Manchester United at the Allianz Arena this evening, extending their unbeaten record in the competition’s group stage to 35 matches.
United who needed a win to brush off their poor run in the Premier League started this encounter on the brighter side and almost snatched the opener, but Alphonso Davies beat Facundo Pellistri to Christian Eriksen’s pass before Sven Ulreich saved the midfielder’s rebound.
The home team then took it off from there, brushing the Red Devils off to score two goals within four minutes. First was through Leroy Sane whose shot Andre Onana didn’t do well to parry successfully. The second goal was through Serge Gnabry, but the effort was all Jamal Musiala’s, as he maneuvered his way into United’s box before setting his compatriot up before halftime.
Just like the first half, Erik Ten Hag’s men resumed the second half the brighter side but got a goal this time via Rasmus Hojlund who pounced on Marcus Rashford’s pass to register his first goal in the colours of United. A few minutes later, Bayern extended their lead, but from a penalty kick that Harry Kane duly converted after Eriksen handled the ball in the box.
The Red Devils rallied back once again and got themselves a lifeline through Casemiro who made it 3-2 in the 88th minute. However, Bayern responded with a goal again in the 92nd minute through Mathys Tel, before United’s final effort saw Casemiro notch a double after converting Bruno Fernandes’s free-kick, ending the encounter 4-3 in Germany.
