Inter Milan struck late to earn a strong advantage over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, after winning 2-1 at the Allianz Arena.

A late goal from Davide Frattesi gave Simone Inzaghi’s side the victory, after Thomas Muller had cancelled Lautaro Martinez’s opener.

Bayern dominated the opening half hour with England captain Harry Kane curling an effort against the right-hand post. However, they fell behind to Inter’s first shot on target.

The Italian side took the lead in the 38th minute, when Marcus Thuram flicked the ball towards Lautaro Martinez, who fired his effort with the outside of the boot into the net.

The Germans got back into the game as Muller finished from close range, sending home Korad Laimer’s low cross in the 85th minute.

The goal looked to have given the Bavarians a slight hope into the return leg, However, the Serie A leaders turned it around few minutes after.

Inter retook the lead in the 88th minute, as Carlos Augusto’s cross was converted by substitute Davide Frattesi. The goal ensured the Italians would leave Germany with a crucial advantage.

The defeat also ended Bayern’s 22-match unbeaten home run in the Champions League, dating back to 2021.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern will hope to turn the tide around as Bayern travel to San Siro for the return fixture, next Wednesday.

The winner will face either of Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in a two-legged semi-final.
