Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata will miss the upcoming UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash against Serie A leaders Inter Milan due to an injury he suffered during the weekend.

Around the 46th minute of the La Liga fixture against Sevilla on Saturday, a visibly emotional Morata had to be replaced by Memphis Depay, after picking up an injury.

The club has now confirmed this morning that the ex-Juventus striker suffered a bone bruise and strained ligaments in his right knee, without providing a timeline for his return and leaving his availability for future matches uncertain.

“Our striker underwent an MRI scan this morning which confirmed his injury,” the statement from Atletico Madrid reads.

“Álvaro Morata had to be substituted in the first half of the match played at the Sánchez Pizjuán against Sevilla. On Monday morning he underwent an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury and the medical services report indicates that he suffered “a bone contusion and sprain of the internal lateral ligament of his right knee”. He is awaiting further treatment.”

As one of the joint-top scorers in the Champions League this season (five goals from six matches) Morata will not be available for Atletico’s UCL Round of 16 first-leg clash against Inter Milan at San Siro on February 20, 2024.

The Spaniard, however, could be in contention to feature in the return leg at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on March 13, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, and as reported by Football Italia.
