The first leg of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final clash between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid ended in a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena on Monday.
Vinícius Júnior’s late penalty ensured Real Madrid extended their unbeaten streak against Bayern Munich after Harry Kane had given the Bavarians the lead from the spot.
Bayern dominated proceedings from the blast of the whistle, and could have scored about two goals in the opening five minutes, but Leroy Sane’s wastefulness will come back to hunt the Bundesliga giants.
Despite being the second-best side on the pitch, Madrid took the lead in the 24th minute when Toni Kroos’ perfect pass found Vinicius who slotted past Manuel Neuer for his 20th goal across all competitions this season.
A few minutes into the second half, Sane redeemed himself by beating Andriy Lunin with a great strike after getting the better of Ferland Mendy in the box.
Harry Kane then extended Bayern’s lead from the spot about four minutes later, after Lucas Vázquez fouled Jamal Musiala.
As it turned out, Madrid also won a penalty of theirs around the 80th minute when Kim Min-jae clumsily brought Rodrygo down in the box—allowing Vinicius to beat Neuer for the second time in the game.
The draw leaves the tie finely balanced for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, as Madrid remains unbeaten in the UCL this season.
