Despite succumbing to a 3-2 loss to Rennes away at the Roazhon Park, AC Milan secured their spot in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) round of 16, thanks to their aggregate score.
The Rossoneri headed into this encounter with a comfortable 3-0 win in the first leg but got an early subtle scare when Benjamin Bourigeaud put the home team ahead in the eleventh minute.
Milan, however, remained a threat and got their equalizer 11 minutes later through Luka Jović’s header, to see the first half end in a draw, after an intense display from both sides.
Rennes started the second half strongly, capitalizing on a penalty which Bourigeaud converted to take the lead, again but Milan responded quickly with Rafael Leão’s goal in the 58th minute
The back-and-forth continued between both sides, as Bourigeaud completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.
Rennes, more determined than their opponent were relentless in their efforts to do the improbable and knock the current Serial A leaders out, but Milan’s defence held firm to see out the game and secure their place in the last-16 draw.
