Manchester United are hopeful they can beat Arsenal in the summer transfer race for Viktor Gyokeres.

They see the need to strengthen their team after inconsistent performances in the 2024-25 season under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

Currently, United cannot afford a deal in January. However, they plan to raise funds for the next window, which would allow them to make further signings.

Sporting Lisbon, Gyokeres’ current club, prefers to wait until summer for any transfers. The player has scored 75 goals in 80 appearances for Sporting.

Arsenal is also interested in Gyokeres. Manager Mikel Arteta has stated they are looking for more attacking options. The Gunners are also considering players like Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and Evan Ferguson from Brighton.

United believe they can fend off Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres. They maintain a good relationship with Sporting, and Gyokeres has expressed a desire to work with Amorim again.

Gyokeres has previously spent time in British football on the books at Brighton, Swansea and Coventry, with a move to Portugal being made in 2023.

His stock has soared from there, with the release clause in his current contract said to stand at €100 million (£84m/$103m).
