Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has shared why he holds Sir Alex Ferguson responsible for the club’s decline.

Manchester United had another rough start to the season and are far from competing for the Premier League title. The team hasn’t won the league since Ferguson led them to victory in the 2012-13 season, which was his last in charge.

Currently, United sit 12th on the table, already 10 points behind leaders Liverpool after just eight matches. Evra, who won several trophies under Ferguson, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League, has given his thoughts on why the club is struggling to return to its former glory.

He explained that today’s players are finding it hard to fight for trophies. Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “It’s always tough to talk about United right now because back in the day we used to play for the fan, for the badge, for the history.

“We lose a little bit of those values. I blame myself, I blame Sir Alex Ferguson. When we left, we left too early and it’s difficult for the players because they don’t have any example.”

While manager Erik ten Hag has won the FA Cup and League Cup during his time in charge, his future at the club remains uncertain. This is as a result of the team’s failure to challenge for the Premier League title.

Ten Hag has also struggled to make an impact in European competitions and will try again on Thursday when Manchester United face Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
