Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed frustration over a controversial penalty call that contributed to his team’s 2-1 loss at West Ham few hours ago.
The match began with Crysencio Summerville scoring his first goal for West Ham, putting them ahead. Late in the second half, Jarrod Bowen converted a penalty at the London Stadium, giving West Ham the winning goal.
Manchester United managed to equalize when Casemiro scored with a header. However, Bowen’s penalty ultimately secured the victory for the home team.
Initially, referee David Coote didn’t call for a penalty after Matthijs De Ligt’s collision with Danny Ings. But, following advice from VAR official Michael Oliver, Coote reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and awarded the spot-kick.
Ten Hag told the BBC, “Three times this season we feel injustice.” He noted that Manchester United created many chances and believed they should’ve been two or three up.
Reflecting on the second half, he explained that although the team was forcing it, they allowed West Ham back into the game.
Ten Hag praised his players for showing “personality and character” when they fought back to level the score. However, he described the penalty decision as unfair and unjust.
