Super Eagles’ Victor Boniface scored from the penalty spot as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in their Bundesliga matchday 32 fixture at the Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday.
Having been crowned 2023/24 Bundesliga champions after their 5-0 demolition of Werder Bremen on matchday 29, suspended Xabi Alonso rested a couple of his key players including Boniface, Florian Wirtz and Jeremy Frimpong ahead of their crucial UEFA Europa League semi-final clash against Roma on Thursday, following their 2-0 victory in the first leg.
Leverkusen showcased their dominance early on as Granit Xhaka’s thunderous strike put them ahead within 15 minutes before Frankfurt found a lifeline through Hugo Ekitiké’s strike in the 32nd minute.
Despite Frankfurt’s efforts, Patrik Schick extended the Die Werkself’s lead in the 44th minute, before second-half errors saw Exequiel Palacios and newly introduced Jeremie Frimpong grab one goal apiece.
Boniface sealed the deal for Leverkusen with a clinical penalty late in the game after replacing Schick in the 61st minute. The goal took his season’s tally to 12 goals and nine assists in 21 league appearances.
The victory sees Leverkusen equal Benfica’s 59-year European record for the longest unbeaten games in (48 games).
