Victor Wembanyama won’t be present, according to the San Antonio Spurs, who have prepared for a brief training camp before traveling to Sacramento for the California Classic Summer League next week.
Instead, the team’s first-round draft pick will arrive in Las Vegas before the Summer League debut on July 7 against the Charlotte Hornets.
Wembanyama is anticipated to face the Hornets and No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller in his NBA Summer League debut.
Gregg Popovich, the coach of the Spurs, forecasted that considering Wembanyama’s recent workload playing in the LNB Pro A French League, the team would ease him into the Summer League program after the NBA Draft.
Wembanyama just finished a season leading the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92s to the LNB Pro A Finals, playing 34 games while averaging 21.6 points and 10.2 rebounds playing 32 minutes per game.
Wembanyama is anticipated to play in two games at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. San Antonio aims to use the time spent away from the Summer League group to help Wembanyama acclimatize to his new teammates who will play more significant roles this upcoming season, in addition to providing its prized first-round pick a little bit of a rest.
On July 3 and July 5, San Antonio plays two games in Sacramento before moving on to Las Vegas for NBA Summer League.
