Ed Woodward, former Manchester United executive vice-chairman, has returned to football after landing his first job since leaving Old Trafford. He has joined the Bloomsbury Football Foundation’s board of trustees.
Ed Woodward’s appointment, according to the charity, is a “huge signing” because it is his first football-related role since leaving United in 2022. Woodward stayed at Old Trafford for a decade but was unpopular with fans, owing primarily to some questionable transfer decisions.
He joined the eSports business EStars as a non-executive director in 2023, but this is his first football-related work since leaving United. The Bloomsbury Football Foundation is a London-based nonprofit that provides an inclusive football program for youth.
According to Woodward, he expressed his satisfaction with joining the organisation.
“This is an exciting opportunity to join a charity that is already having a significant impact on the lives of young Londoners through the power of football. Visiting a Bloomsbury football session reaffirmed my belief that football has the power to change lives. The support the charity is already receiving is making a real impact on the pitch. The session represented the diversity of London – the coaches were supportive, the players were engaged, and they seemed to be enjoying every minute.”
Woodward will be aiming to make an impact with his new post, but he will also be keeping an eye on what happens at Manchester United. The Red Devils are also ready to make significant changes this summer, with Omar Berrada taking over as CEO, and the club hopes to bring in Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox as part of a shake-up.
