Xabi Alonso hopes to lure £20m Tyler Morton on loan to Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso hopes to sign Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton on loan. Morton graduated from Liverpool’s junior academy. He made his senior debut during the 2021-22 season but has only made eight appearances for the club since then.

Morton was on loan at Hull City and Blackburn Rovers throughout the previous two seasons. The midfielder made 41 appearances in all competitions during the 2023–24 season, scoring twice and dishing out five assists. It was a successful season for him.

Morton’s impressive outing in the Championship caught the attention of Bayer Leverkusen manager Alonso. He has expressed his desire to bring in the 21-year-old on loan to the Bundesliga champions. The Reds had previously valued their player at £20 million (€23m/$26m) and it now remains to be seen if they are willing to let the youngster leave on a temporary deal.

The former Hull City player did play for the Merseyside team in preseason friendlies before the 2024–25 season. It appears that he was a part of Arne Slot’s plans. That being said, there are currently a number of players in their squad who are ranked higher than him in the midfield hierarchy.

In addition to Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, another Bundesliga team, is also interested in signing Morton. Whether the Premier League team decides to let go of the player before the summer transfer window ends on Friday is still up in the air.
